Migraine Triggers – What Triggers Migraines?

Over 30 million people living in the United States suffer with migraines and 3x more women than men suffer. Migraines are throbbing pain, usually on one side of the head. Each person who suffers from an attack has different triggers. If there are so many triggers, is there a healthy solution or just something a person has to mask and take one day-at-a-time? Who has not suffered from a headache through their life, it is our body way of informing us that something is wrong. I was so sick after eating chocolate, but I did not put two-two together until later.

What about stress? Who does not have stress? Do you have children? Are you going to school? Are you a single parent? Did someone love you die? Are you getting married or unfortunately a divorce? You might have heard someone tell you, “Just relax.” That's great, but do not you relax when you're with your friends and family? It does not change the fact that you are going through things or even have a large list of things to do. You live busy lives and things need to get done – who else is going to do them? Do you eat or drink? Then in turn do you turn to your favorite food such as alcohol? I would come home from work and have a glass of wine, but the next day I would wake up with a migraine.

Medication

You are in pain. That is the bottom line, so you finally find a doctor who prescribes you medicine. But some are not really listening to you. They see your history, so they prescribe you a shot of TORADOL and send you on your way, but you are still in pain.

You continue to see another doctor who prescribes you more medicine which you have already explained does not work. Great! It has other side-effects. It causes your stomach to hurt, dizziness, faultness, tiredness, and many more. There are some medicines that have reactions to other medications. So you begin to wonder, “Is it even worth it?” You wanted the pain to go away, not for your life style too slow down. What do you do? Stand up for healthy living; for your health and well-being. Tips for Natural Migraine Relief

Migraines can be scary. It's estimated that nearly 30 million people suffer from them. I remember wondering if I would die from the pain or worried it might be a brain tumor. I've suffered with them for most of my life. For many years, they rented a few hours and I would get them a few times a month depending on lifestyle and stress. About 10 years ago, I started getting 3 day migraines.

I tried many prescription drugs and none worked or had a list of side effects I refrained to take a chance on experiencing. I finally looked to natural remedies to hopefully cure or at least bring relief. I found several things that helped me and I'd like to share a few with you.

1. Find out what foods trigger your migraines.

Common triggers are; Cheese (dairy), MSG (monosodium glutamate), Chemical additives and preservatives, onions, alcohol, sugar, eggs, and gluten. One of the biggest triggers is caffeine! Yes, that sounds unreal since caffeine can provide relief but it works both ways. If you get migraines, I would eliminate all caffeine first. Do not go cold turkey, take 2-4 weeks and wean yourself off to avoid withdrawal heads.

2. Stay hydrated. Drink half of your body weight in ounces per day of water. More if you exercise.

3.Exercise regularly. Regular exercise Promotes healthy circulation and helps to alleviate depression and anxiety. You'll sleep better at night too.

4. Get enough sleep. We need 6-9 hours every night.

5. Learn to cope with stress in a healthy manner. We can not eliminate all the stressors in our lives but we can learn to manage them. Stress can trigger a migraine.

6. Eat healthy and frequently. Small meals throughout the day are very beneficial for migraine sufferers. Do not skip breakfast! Eliminate processed and fast food.

7. Stop using synthetic perfumes and fragrances on your person and in your home.

8. For women: Find a qualified holistic practicer and work to get your hormones in balance and have your thyroid checked.

If you do experience a migraine, an ice pack wrapped in a towel and placed under you neck will help with pain relief. You can also place it directly on the pain site. I've found Chiropractic care to be helpful. Therapeutic grade essential oils have helped me tremendously. Make sure you only use the therapeutic grade oils since most of these are sold as “pure” really are not and are not to used directly on your skin.

A Primer on Dizziness and Vertigo

You might have felt that sensation of dizziness when you look down from great height. For instance if you look down from the roof of a skyscraper, you end up feeling giddy for a while. That feeling of momentarily dizziness is not necessarily “vertigo” as described in the world of medicine.

In this article, we will present a basic differentiation between dizziness and vertigo.

Dizziness is a feeling of lightheadedness with or without loss of balance. Dizziness is also felt when there is a blood pressure drop. Dehydration is also a major cause of dizziness, and motion sickness can definitely make people dizzy. There are forms of dizziness that pass without medical intervention. However, dizziness can also be a symptom of a more serious medical condition.

How about vertigo?

Regular folk might think that vertigo is just dizziness, but in the medical profession it is a very specific type of dizziness. Vertigo is more than a sense of being giddy, but instead it is a sensation that the world is spinning. It is also not similar to a fear of heights or acrophobia. BPPV is seen more in older persons than in younger people, and its incidence is higher in women than in men. Although there is no known cause, there are available management approaches that address the problems appropriately.

BPPV is an idiopathic disease without an identifiable cause, but there are cases where BPPV is seen after head injury, ear surgery, labyrinthitis, vertebrobasilar ischemia (or reduced blood flow in that area of ​​the brain), and prolonged bed rest. BPPV may also be seen as an associated symptom in syphilis, drug toxicity, otosclerosis or a genetic problem in the ear that leads to deafness, and Ramsay Hunt syndrome (viral infection).

Symptoms and Treatment for the Thunderclap Headache

A thunderclap headache is a severe and mysterious head with enough force to literally knock a person over. It feels like the worst headache of your life. In the most serious cases, such as those related to bleeding in the brain, the patient is certain to fall unconscious with a short period. The pain can last for 60 minutes to seven to 10 days. The most noticeable pain starts to recede within minutes, but this can often give a false belief that the thunderclap headache is improving on its own.

Treatment

Treatment given for the thunderclap headache depends on the results of the doctors check-up. The areas of greatest concern like swollen or burst blood vessels in the brain or thyroid glands are checked as a matter of urgency. It is also crucial to check for blood clots in the brain. A patient receives a MRI or CAT scan to help diagnosis the condition. If the imaging equipment detects one of the serious conditions, the patient is certain to receive immediate surgery to treat the bleeding.

If a scan is inconclusive, the patient is likely to receive a lumbar puncture or spinal tap to look at the spinal fluid. Migraines Affecting Your Life

Tonight, all of a sudden, I had a migraine headache … the kind where the lights are even too bright. I was working and felt it coming on. Then within minutes, it was FULL force, like a hammer banging constantly on my forehead. I had no idea why I was getting one or when it would disappear.

I remember my sister-in-law telling me when she was pregnant last year, she would get headaches and just let them be. She never took any medicine for them. So when I was pregnant, at the same time as she, I decided I was going to try that same technique. Even though I would get migraines before pregnancy, I, for some stupid reason, thought this new technique would work.

The first one I got, I kept telling myself, Hold out, HOOLLLDDD OOUUUTTT. Well, it did not last long before I knew that was just not going to happen! I took something for it … and for EVERY.SINGLE.ONE after that during my pregnancy. I got so many that I would take something at the slightest inkling of one. They would still come FULL force, but the medicine would keep them in check.

After I gave birth, I got them often when I was not eating regularly. I required that I have to eat every 2-3 hours or the migraines will attack in full force. I'm not sure if this is my body telling me something or what ?!

I have not had one in a while until tonight. I do not know if it came on because I did not eat enough when I ate last or because I am exhausted (baby boy has not been sleeping through the night for the past three weeks and I have no idea why). Medicine did not work. The lights were straining my eyes. Any noise was WAAAY too loud. And my head was killing me. Someone offered me food. I took it. It did not help. I drank water; it did not help. I ate a little more. Then very slowly, it started to subside … just a bit.

The issue I have with headaches, is that I Do not ever want to do anything when I have one. That does not really work when you're a single mom. You have no choice but to take care of your sweet baby that needs and depends on you. So no matter how much my head hurts, I have someone that relations on me. There is no break, no time out, or no let me just lie down for a few minutes. You have to do what you have to do and work through the head pain.

Even as I'm writing this, I still have a headache. I'm hoping it will go way as soon as my head hits the pillow. The problem is … every time I've ever gone to bed with a headache, thinking sleep will “cure” it, I always wake up with one. There's NOTHING that starts off a day worse than a headache. I'm hoping that will not be the case this time.
