Migraines are medical conditions that are the results of sudden dilation and / or constriction of the arteries and blood vessels in the brain. These activities in the blood vessels are due to some chemicals in the brain such as serotonin. Elements have also been linked to the condition. One of these elements is magnesium. It has long been said that magnesium has a direct link to migraines. Some people have asked whether magnesium intake can actually lower the risk or onslaught of a migraine. Some studies have shown that this might just be the case.
It has been decades ago when the one of the members of the scientific community first filed about a link between migraine and magnesium. Despite studies not being totally conclusive, people suffering from migraine have long taken daily magnesium supplements, targeted towards preventing the onslaught of migraine and its pain attacks. Magnesium has also been used intravenously in the form of intravenous magnesium sulfate therapy, in the emergency room to end migraine attacks.
Plenty of recent studies support the earlier suggestion that migraine is directly connected to migraines. In a study with patients experimenting migraine without aura, they were given supplements that contained magnesium such as a 600mg magnesium citrate supplement. The researchers used a variety of techniques to determine if their subjects' brain activity is normal especially during migraine attacks. They also noted and measured the migraine attack frequency and its severity. Based on this study, researchers found two interesting things. First, the patients who took in the magnesium had fewer and less acute attacks as compared to those who did not. Also, blood flow in some parts of the head, particularly of the brain improved in these patients. These result studies suggest that magnesium has a key role when it comes to the activities of the treaties and nerves in the brain such as constriction and expansion. The magnesium has a mechanism that causes changes in the brain, and those changes are have allowed people with migraines to experience some relief that they normally do not feel.
Different studies relating migraines to magnesium have also found other observations. A study showed that migraine patients taking magnesium supplements have shown significantly lower levels of magnesium found in the blood. Another study has shown that this is what happens for about half of all the people suffering from migraine-related headaches; they have levels of magnesium in their blood. The research also suggests that magnesium supplements reduce the frequency of attacks, duration and degree of severity of different migraine-related head types such as ocular migraine and pregnancy migraine. Another study also suggests that people suffering from migraine are more likely to experience heart attacks and strokes. Coincidentally, magnesium appears to help decrease the risk for heart attacks. This seems to be another link between migraines and magnesium. The study points out that one of the possible reasons for this is that magnesium is known for relaxing and dilating blood vessels.
But despite magnesium showing significant effects to relieving migraine, studies have shown that migraine has yet to completely treat or cure migraines. At most, it provides fast relief and helps in preventing migraine onslaught in the future. It has to be noted that taking magnesium supplements do not mean that people will not have migraine anymore. It simply means that the possibility of having one is lower. And if one does get a migraine, its duration and severity can be significantly lower.
